Wine Tasting and Live Music Charity Event to Benefit Heal the Bay

Santa Monica, CALIF., – October 13, 2011 – TRiP Santa Monica, an independent bar and concert venue today announced plans to introduce their new “Exclusively Local” wine list at a wine tasting and charity event on Saturday, October 29th, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

TRiP will feature winemakers from local Malibu vineyards, as well as an eclectic mix of live music acts. In keeping with the local theme, TRiP has chosen to donate 100% of the proceeds from the wine tasting to Heal the Bay, a local non-profit organization dedicated to cleaning up and maintaining the Santa Monica Bay.

At the tasting event, every wine from TRiP’s new “Exclusively Local” menu will be available to sample.

The evening will start at 7:00pm and will feature special musical performances by John Parr, Jason Arimoto, members from Marcus Very Ordinary, Elle Carpenter and more.

“TRiP’s new wine list will feature only locally grown wines from the Malibu region. Many local residents are not even aware that this is an up and coming wine region and currently home to more than 50 locally owned, independent vineyards,” said John DeCoster, owner of TRiP. “Starting on October 29th, TRiP will be a great one stop shop for customers looking to find the very best wines of the region. Some of these wines will be available by the glass and all of these wines will be available for customers to enjoy by the bottle. You’ll even be able to purchase wine to go.”

A Lifestyle Worth Living...One Sip at a Time

Elegant Living - by Kathleen Melton

In your journeys, have you ever passed such a beautiful parcel of land for sale that you dreamt of buying it, putting a motor home on it for the time being, and eventually building a dream home there? I have, twice. Once while traveling through the central coast and once in the hills above Malibu. As yet, however, I have done nothing about it. RICHARD HIRSH, on the other hand, did exactly this, twenty-eight years ago.

The long, winding, uphill drive to Cielo Farms off Kanan Road in Malibu canyon is lined with beautiful stone walls, vineyards, olive trees, and aged wine barrels. The expansive surroundings create anticipation and excitement similar to the gleeful feeling kids express on the tram ride into Disneyland - you just know that someplace very special lies ahead. Finally reaching the top of the property, I pulled up in front of a most magnificent home. Richard Hirsh, the owner of Cielo Farms, greeted me in the pebbled drive way, In jeans, flip flops and a Hawaiian shirt, Richard is immediately unassuming and charming. Designed around the breathtaking 360' views, the Cielo estate home features large glass windows and doors that beckon you to indulge in the outdoor surroundings. Standing at the edge of the glistening infinity pool, taking in the acres and acres of mountains covered in neat, symmetrical rows of grapevines, I felt a part of the sky, as though gazing down from the heavens. The name, Cielo means sky or Heaven in Italian, which captures this awe-inspiring view perfectly.

"I bought this land because I was attracted to the view. I put a motor home on it so when we came up here we could stock food in the fridge and have a sink to use. The view was always the main at-traction. Friends and family would gather here to visit, watch the sunset, and just be. I let the land sit for a long time. My dream was always to have a Tuscan villa at the top of the property." A villa that, according to Richard, would reside amongst the heavens in the sky-Cielo.

A LANDSCAPE ELEMENT
After waiting patiently for twelve years, Richard finally broke ground in 1998. Architect Bob Easton, based out of Montecito, was hired to design the Tuscan villa and Richard's dream was built over the next eight years. "We took 55 feet of the hilltop to build here.
All of the rock that you see lining the drive way and around the property is rock from this land." And the vineyard? Richard smiles, "The hillsides were so scarred from the excavation we had to do something to fix it up. The vineyards were started solely as a landscaping element." A landscaping element that took on a life of it's own.

Transforming the land into a true vineyard was something Richard admits he did not know much about. "I went in blind. I had collected wines in the past, but I never thought creating wines would be something I'd get passionate about. I didn't even know what to plant. But there was this sense of get ting in on the ground floor of something special, of being an early pioneer in this area."
"AS PIONEERS OF MALIBU WINE COUNTRY, WE ARE ALL SUPPORTIVE OF ONE ANOTHER, NOT COMPETITIVE. THERE IS A SENSE OF PERHAPS WHAT NAPA AND LOS OLIVOS WERE LIKE IN THE EARLY DAYS. "

Surrounded by three other vineyards including the Rosenthal Malibu estate and the Semler Malibu estate and Saddle-rock vineyards, Richard quickly became immersed in this pioneering wine community, a local community that has been recognized by the federal government as several distinct appellations. Cielo Farms is part of the Saddlerock Malibu appellation, which neighbor Ron Semler applied for and graciously included Cielo Farms in. An appellation is a legally defined and protected geographical location used to identify and certify the quality and reputation of grapes grown there. "As pioneers of Malibu Wine Country, we are all supportive of one another, not competitive. There is a sense of perhaps what Napa and Los Olives were like in the early days."
Richard turned to these neighbors, already successful vineyards in their own right, and relied on their knowledge, expertise, and contacts in the wine world. "Everyone was – and still is - so informative and eager to help. If a local vineyard needs anything, they will stop what their doing and offer to help. We share crews, equipment, consultants, anything and everything."

Partial to red wines himself, Richard planted his first estate vines on five acres in 2003. Their first showing of 2006 wines at the San Francisco International Wine Competition in 2008 garnered a Double Gold Winner for the Malibu Estate Cielo Wineyards Syrah Blackcrow Mountain as well as Bronze Winners for the 2006 Malibu Rouge and Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 3 Reserve Purple Mountain. Quite prestigious honors for what began as a humble landscape element.

A LIFESTYLE ... A LEGACY

Any day of the week, Richard is working his vines. Planted on nine acres of steep mountainous terrain, the grape vines thrive in this micro-climate that sits approximately 2,000 feet above sea level. Holding on tight as we toured the steep slopes of the vineyard in an open Kawasaki jeep, Richard is careful to point out the varietals that are planted – everything from syrah to cabernet franc. On this day, the grapes were beautiful, showing green, red and deep purple on the same clusters, signaling the entry into their final phase of development before the fall harvest.

As a successful businessman in partnership with his brother, William "Bill" Hirsh helps to navigate the direction and vision for Cielo Farms.
"AT THIS STAGE OFMY LIFE, I SEE THIS WINE EXPERIENCE FILLING A VOID - AS CREATING A WHOLE FAMILY EXPERIENCE - A PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO GATHER AND SHARE IN A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. IT'S A LOT MORE THAN MAKING WINE AND SERVING WINE - IT'S A LIFESTYLE. "

The pair are slowly figuring out how to make Cielo Wineyard work as a business. Winemaking is first and foremost about passion and love, investing not just money and time, but also your soul. It has now became more than a hobby for Richard, it has become a family lifestyle. As a third generation Californian and a new grandfather, family is of the utmost importance to Richard.
"At this stage of my life, I see this wine experience filling a void – as creating a whole family experience – a place for everyone to gather and share in a similar experience. It's a lot more than making wine and serving wine – it's a lifestyle."
"CREATING SOMETHING THAT BRINGS PLEASURE TO PEOPLE IS VERY REWARDING. WHATEVER SUCCESS I HAVE IS BECAUSE I SURROUND MYSELF WITH GREAT PEOPLE. ALL THOSE AROUND ME ARE MUCH MORE TALENTEDTHAT I AM. "

CIELO SECRETS – PEOPLE ARE THE KEY

"Creating something that brings pleasure to people is very rewarding," Richard confesses. And he is the first to give credit for his success to those around him. "Whatever success I have is because I surround myself with great people. All those around me are much more talented that I am." He describes his brother, Bill, the Director of Cielo Wine-yards, as "the soul of this venture." Together, they have assembled a great team of people, including a most important team leader, brought in to Cielo in 2007, Jason Moore.

"The energy behind our wines is amazing," Richard states proudly refleeting on the hard work that goes into producing the Cielo Estate and Woodstock wines. The grapes and vines here at Cielo wineyards are handled with the utmost care. The person directing that care is wine maker, Jason Moore. "Our wines are big wines due to the estate grapes being so rich and to our wine maker, Jason." Working with the ranchers at Cielo, he has taught them everything from his different style of pruning to how to handle the grapes during various growth cycles. For Cielo he does not harvest until the sugars in the grapes reach up to thirty, a higher number than most which yields a bigger taste and higher alcohol content. Riding the line between perfection and too sweet, the grapes are harvested just in time and loaded onto refrigerated trucks and shipped to Napa. Back in Napa, Jason decides which wine will be aged in various French oak barrels, all of which are toasted and aged differently. The entire recipe for each wine is based on how Jason envisions the end result.

PRODUCTS WITH PERSONALITY

"We have a lot of fun introducing new products. Bill is an expert marketer and merchandiser which has played an integral role in our success as we feel our way through these early years."

In addition to the Cielo label under the Saddlerock Malibu appellation, Cielo Farms also produces 3,000 cases of wine utilizing Napa grapes under their Woodstock label introduced in June 2006. "The Woodstock label is great because we can come up with outrageous blends," Richard shares with the same excitement as a kid given his first mad-science kit. "Our HoneyPie wine, under the Woodstock label, is a blend of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and Muscat. It has been huge success and is by far our best selling wine."

Do you ever look at a wine label and wonder what is behind the name? For both the Cielo and Woodstock labels, many wine names reflect the history of the land or personalities of the owners. Hobo Hill, for instance, a 2005 Merlot, pays tribute to an actual hobo who had taken up residence under a tree on the Cielo Farms property when it was just an untouched hill with a gorgeous view. This individual left of his own accord after the excavation began, but in tribute to him, Richard let the tree where he lived remain, and named the wine produced from the grapes planted near that tree in his honor. This personal element is the common thread that binds all that Cielo Farms produces.

"BOUGHT THIS LAND BECAUSE I WAS ATTRACTED TO THE VIEW. THE VIEW WAS ALWAYS THE MAIN ATTRACTION. MY DREAM WAS ALWAYS TO HAVE A TUSCAN VILLA AT THE TOP OF THE PROPERTY. A VILLA THAT WOULD RESIDE AMONGST THE HEAVENS IN THE SKY CIELO.”

Cielo Farms also a wine club with various types of memberships available. The Cielo Estate and Woodstock wines may be found at regional Whole Foods and select restaurants and hotels, including Paradise Cove, Grissini in Agoura Hills, Charlie's in Malibu, Bellavino Wine Bar in Westlake Village, and the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel.

INSPIRED

Back at home, in my backyard, I studied my own scarred hill. Barren from lack of watering, overly active kids climbing all over it during air soft wars, and years of neglect, I was now able to envision neat, horizontal rows of blooming colorful grapes vines, family and friends gathering around, laughing and enjoying the lifestyle here. At home. Thank you, Richard and Cielo Farms. For being big. For being bold. For demonstrating the pleasure of a lifestyle worth living, one sip at a time.
